Hong Kong Wetlands

To many visitors, Hong Kong is a dynamic and sophisticated metropolis. Little did they know the beauty and valuable wetlands of high importance behind the city, the alter ego of Hong Kong. Thanks to the Pearl River, the largest river system of 2,200 km long in southern China, which discharges through an extensive deltaic area into Deep Bay on the north west of Hong Kong, before flowing into the South China Sea.

The fresh water input of the Pearl River and the seawater of the South China forms the intertidal areas around Deep Bay and it supports many different wetlands (areas where water is primary factor controlling the ecosystem). The wetlands provide a nursery ground for a diversity of animals such as fish, shrimps, crabs and other shellfish... It also serves as both a wintering and a stopping-over site for migratory waterbirds.

The wetlands around the Deep Bay area have been designated as Ramsar Site (Wetland of International Importance).

To get a close up experiences with some of the stunning inhabitants of the wetlands, you can visit the Hong Kong Wetland Park to see the birds in the bird hides and the inhabitants along the boardwalk.
